E-book Library:"Art"

This is a thoroughly illustrated study of the close and continuous relationship between two of modern culture’s central phenomena: the photographic image and travel. Contributing to the growing literature of travel and its representations, the book argues that from its beginnings, photography has played a constitutive role in the formation of travel--comparable in importance to its part in the portrayal of social identity. It shows how, in turn, travel has shaped the use and language of all types of photographic production.

The Travel Book
By:"Lonely Planet,"
Published on 2010 by Lonely Planet

E-book Library:"Travel"

And here's the list. Everywhere. In one comprehensive volume. Defining everywhere was no easy task. Jotting down the 192 member states of the United Nations was the easy part; deciding which other destinations to include provoked much spirited debate and food for thought. We're very proud of this book, an all-consuming project that has involved huge input from authors, staff, photographers and experts from around the globe. Like any serious addiction, the travel bug requires constant attention. If, like me, you consider travel to be an important part of your life, then this book will be bad news - it shows us that no matter how far we travel, there's always further to go. At Lonely Planet we believe passionately in the power of independent travel to transform travellers and the communities to which they travel. Bringing respect, sensitivity, curiosity and a generous dose of humour to the travel experience is enormously important, and we hope this book acts not just as a reference tool, but also as a valuable introduction to a better travel experience. Travel is the world's most important business, but it means far more than just money and employment. It is through travel that we go out and meet the world and the world cornes to meet us. So open The Travel Book and dive inside - my bet is that soon you'll want to turn the printed experience into a real one.

An Anthology of Women's Travel Writing

An Anthology of Women's Travel Writing
By:"Shirley Foster","Sara Mills"
Published on 2002 by Manchester University Press

E-book Library:"Literary Criticism"

This anthology aims to challenge stereotypes of women travellers. Rather than simply presenting writings by Victorian women who travelled bravely around the world disregarding social convention and danger, the editors present a range of writing and possible ways of being a woman traveller. As well as the 'eccentric' woman traveller, the editors have included writings by those who might be seen as failed travellers, cautious and conventional travellers and those who did not conform to the adventurous heroine stereotype. Because travelling as a woman and writing as a woman presents the author with a number of textual problems which must be negotiated, Foster and Mills have chosen to include writings which confronted these problems and which resolved them (or did not resolve them) in different ways. These textual problems include the depiction of other women, the representation of spatial relations, the negotiations undertaken in relation to the adventure heroine narrative and character and the position taken by the author in relation to the representation of knowledge. These issues are all crucial in relation to travel writing by women, and the women, whose writing has been collected together in this anthology have made bold decisions in relation to them.

Voices of Hope
By:"David Feintuch"

E-book Library:"Fiction"

Decades have passed since Nick Seafort battled the vicious aliens. Now, in the fifth installment of the celebrated Seafort Saga, it’s trouble on Earth that looms . . . Everyone knows Nick Seafort as “the Fisherman”—the hero who stopped the merciless, fishlike aliens when they attacked Earth. Voices of Hope picks up with Seafort decades later, after he’s retired as the Secretary General of the United Nations. Despite his trappings of power, he has been unable to aid the so-called transpops, desperate people who live in the dangerous lower levels of New York City. When Seafort’s son, Philip, follows a friend into the streets of New York, he encounters the transpop culture—one evolved to exist in the shadows and operate with ruthless efficiency. The trannies are a powder keg ready to blow, and a water shortage appears to be the spark to prove that humans can be far more dangerous than any outer-space alien. Long ago, Seafort had braved these violent streets to find his wife; now he must return to save his son.

A Rant and a Road Trip

A Rant and a Road Trip
By:"Brendan J. A. O'Leary"
Published on 2011-04-13 by iUniverse

E-book Library:"Travel"

'A Rant and a Road Trip' chronicles an alternative holiday, you might say, a heart-on-the-sleeve road trip. It’s not so much about where Brendan O’Leary went, but what he found when he got there and the people he met along the way. This journal covers five weeks spent on the road, drifting from town to town and motel to motel, living out of a suitcase and, for the most part, never knowing where the next stop will be. But believe it when O’Leary tells you that it can be a very liberating experience, seeing “another town, another diner, another motel,” the story continuing as he travels to new places. Nothing can beat the feeling that comes from unexpected discoveries made while traveling. As you travel through the pages of this journal, you’ll see what O’Leary sees and feel what he feels. From New Jersey to Texas to California, O’Leary shares his thoughts about the places he visits and the people he meets. Written as very personal journal entries, O’Leary examines the essence of America through his experiences and shares the ups and downs of living life on the road.

The Road Trip that Changed the World

The Road Trip that Changed the World
By:"Mark Sayers"
Published on 2012-05-01 by Moody Publishers

E-book Library:"Religion"

Can’t find no satisfaction? There’s no shortage of prescriptions for restlessness out there: Seek adventure. Live your life. Don’t hold back. Sound familiar? The Road Trip that Changed the World is a book challenging the contemporary conviction that personal freedom and self-fulfillment are the highest good. Like the characters in a Jack Kerouac novel, we’ve dirtied the dream of white picket fences with exhaust fumes. The new dream is the open road—and freedom. Yet we still desire the solace of faith. We like the concept of the sacred, but unwittingly subscribe to secularized, westernized spirituality. We’re convinced that there is a deeper plot to this thing called life, yet watered-down, therapeutic forms of religion are all we choose to swallow, and our personal story trumps any larger narrative. This is the non-committal culture of the road. Though driving on freely, we have forgotten where we’re headed. Jesus said His road is narrow. He wasn’t some aimless nomad. He had more than just a half tank of gas—He had passion, objectives, and a destination. Do you?

Dark Tourism

Dark Tourism
By:"J. John Lennon","Malcolm Foley"
Published on 2000 by Cengage Learning EMEA

E-book Library:"Business & Economics"

This book sets out to explore a dark tourisma ; that is, the representation of inhuman acts, and how these are interpreted for visitors at a number of places throughout the world, for example the sites of concentration camps in both Western and Eastern Europe. Many people wish to experience the reality behind the media images, or are prompted to find out more by a personal association with places or events. The phenomenon raises ethical issues over the status and nature of objects, the extent of their interpretation, the appropriate political and managerial response and the nature of the experience as perceived by the visitor, their residents and local residents. Events, sites, types of visit and a hosta reactions are considered in order to construct the parameters of the concept of a dark tourisma . Many acts of inhumanity are celebrated as heritage sites in Britain (for example, the Tower of London, Edinburgh Castle), and the Berlin Wall has become a significant attraction despite claiming many victims.
